1. Why Should I Take Dance Classes?

Dance is one of the earliest forms of human expression and has been an important part of almost every single culture on earth. If connecting to our shared history and humanity isn’t a good enough reason to come by the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Reston and take a dance class, below you’ll find a few more reasons!

When you’re ready to start dancing, give us a call. We have classes for some of the world’s most beloved dances, including ballroom, samba, waltz, salsa, mambo, and many others, at levels from beginner to advanced.

    Dancing Can Improve Your Health

Dancing has, time and time again, been shown to be incredibly beneficial to your overall health. Regular cardiovascular activity can help slow down or prevent everything from heart disease to dementia, as well as many other health issues. Learning how to dance can help you rebuild any strength and dexterity that you have lost as a result of an injury or accident, and it can help you manage your weight.

People who dance regularly also find that they suffer from depression and anxiety less than people who don’t exercise normally. Physical activities like dancing help keep your body on a normal sleep schedule which in turn keeps your body healthier and your mind happier!

Dancing Helps You Meet New People

While dancing by yourself is great, dancing with others and becoming part of a community is an experience that you will cherish forever. At Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Reston, we have many different levels of dance classes, so you’ll be working and dancing alongside people who are at similar skill levels. Working with others at your level will help encourage you to keep going and it will stop you from feeling discouraged. The friendships you forge in dance class are friendships that tend to last because they are based on mutual interests and respect for each other’s skills and dedication to dance.

Our dance school is set up in a way that encourages people to join together to become better dancers. We offer weekly dance parties where people from different classes and skill levels can get together and show off what they’ve learned and teach others some new moves.

Deciding to learn a new hobby or skill can be a difficult decision to make because it so often fraught with an overabundance of choices that you have to make. Learning dance is no different. First, you’re probably wondering which dance (or dances) you want to learn because they all look exciting. Second, if you have no formal dance training, knowing what to look for in a dance studio can seem like you’re just taking shots in the dark and hoping you hit a winner.

Here at Fred Astaire Franchise Dance Studio in Reston, we want to make it easier for you to find the right dance studio for what you want to learn. In this blog, we will go over some of the basics of what you should expect from a dance school so that you’ll find the right fit right away. Ask as Many Questions as You Need To

As modern humans, we hate feeling like we don’t know everything. Nowhere is this more apparent then the moments where we refuse to ask questions about things that we’re fascinated with. When you call our dance studio, you’ll speak with someone who knows their stuff when it comes to dance. Unlike other places that make you feel bad for not knowing the answers to questions, we love to educate you about dance. In fact, once you get us started, it can be hard to get us to stop talking about dance!

We’re here to help you, so please, ask as many questions as you want. We can tell you about our school’s philosophy, what styles we teach, what class levels we have available, and what some of the perks of learning from us are.

    Come See the Dance Studio

We have some great pictures of our dance studio here on the website but they don’t really do the space any real justice. We’ve taken the time to make our studio feel comfortable and welcoming because we know that that is one key on the path to pure dance success and fun.

Find Out Why the Dance Instructors Teach

At some dance schools, instructors may be very talented but they’re only teaching because they need to make ends meet. Some have no spark for teaching while others seem to actually resent their students. At Fred Astaire in Reston, everyone who teaches does so because they love to share the art of dance with other people. They’re all incredibly gifted dancers but more importantly, they want to see you become a better dancer.

If the Reston Fred Astaire dance studio seems like the perfect place for you, please give us a call. If you want to ask more questions or see the space, we can help you with that too! We can’t wait to help you discover your new favorite pastime!

    Dancing is Fun

Everyone knows that dancing is fun. Even the people who say that they don’t like to dance are definitely two-stepping around their kitchen when a good song starts playing on their phone! If you take dance lessons not only are you learning a fun new skill, you’re also making sure that you aren’t the grump who refuses to dance with their date and you’re also helping yourself feel more confident. Dancing is a skill that everyone admires but very few take the next step. Enjoy yourself while also being the envy of all the sticks-in-the-mud who would rather sit around instead of enjoying themselves and joining in the celebration.

  4. Swing vs West Coast Swing

Swing dancing is a classic American-style dance that was invented in the 1920s. Over the years, many variations on this style have come to life. Here at Fred Astaire Reston, we teach both traditional swing dancing as well as west coast swing. We are often asked what the difference is between these two styles, so in this blog, we will be looking at them a little more in depth.

    Swing

The original form of swing dancing dates back to the 1920s. It rose to popularity alongside the swing style of jazz. Standard swing revolves around a variety of circular patterns.Modern swing dancers have adapted the style to go well with a wide variety of music, and over the last 90 plus years, swing has continually evolved to include a blend of many different styles.

    West Coast Swing

One of the biggest differences between standard swing and west coast swing is that the latter is based around rectangular patterns, while the former is based around circular patterns. West coast swing is also a slower, more formal style relative to standard swing. It is still a fast-paced and fun dance to learn when compared to purely formal ballroom styles.

No matter what style of swing dancing you are interested in learning, we can help. Our talented staff has years of experience both dancing professionally and teaching. When you are looking for the best dance lessons in Reston, give us a call. Your first lesson is free, so contact us today to sign up!

  5. Popular Latin Dances, Part Two

In our last blog, we looked at three different latin dances: the tango, the rumba, and salsa. At Fred Astaire Reston, we love teaching Latin dance styles. They are extremely fun for everyone involved. We offer dance lessons in Reston that focus on the Latin dances you’d like to learn. Here, we will look at three more popular latin dances.

    Samba

The Samba is a Brazilian style that originated in the early 20th century. By the 1930s, it was formally adopted by Brazilian society as a ballroom dance. Like many aspects of Brazilian culture, the samba draws influences from both African and Latin sources. One of the most defining aspects of samba is its 2/4 meter.

    Merengue

Merengue is a Latin dance style that originated in the Dominican Republic. It is one of the easiest dances to learn. Compared to many Latin dance styles, it is far more relaxed, which allows for complex moves to be performed with greater ease than you’d expect.

    Bachata

Another popular Dominican style is called bachata dance. Bachata is a much more recent development compared to the other dances we have looked at. The roots of bachata can be traced back to the early 1960s.

Over the last two blogs, we looked at six different styles of Latin dance, but there are many more that exist. Interested in learning how to do these dances yourself? Use our online form to sign up for your free introductory lesson. With a little bit of time and dedication, we will have you dancing like you never knew you could!
