One of the absolute joys of ballroom dance is that you’re able to take advantage of the social aspects. You get exercise, make friends, and boost your confidence. At Fred Astaire of Reston, we’re thrilled to see new friendships blossom due to the power of dance.

Getting out there the first time can be a little intimidating, however. That’s why we’ll review the top 5 dances for beginners to tackle. You’ll get 3 of the Rhythm style of dance, and 2 of the Smooth style of dance. All 5 are very social dance friendly.

  1. Rumba is a slow and romantic Rhythm dance with Latin roots. You can dance to either a traditional Latin tempo or to more contemporary artists like Sting or Michael Buble. It’s a stationary dance, which makes it great for small dance floors and tight spaces.
  2. East Coast Swing is another Rhythm dance, though more lively and upbeat. It’s also known as the jitterbug, and it fits a classic tune like Glenn Miller’s In The Mood. It’s a spot dance, meaning it doesn’t travel, but you can throw in some flair and rotate movements to cover more space.
  3. The Slow Waltz is a Smooth style of dance, and it’s a more formal style. You’ve probably seen it danced at weddings or ballroom social dances. It’s very fluid and it allows you to travel around the dance floor.
  4. The Foxtrot is another Smooth style, but it can be slow or more energetic. Imagine the music of the Rat Pack, like Sinatra’s Fly Me To The Moon or Dino’s On The Street Where You Live, and you’ll get the idea.
  5. The Cha Cha Cha is an extremely popular Rhythm dance of Cuban origin. It followed in the footsteps of the Mambo, and it’s been a hit since the 1950’s.
